Questions to Ask a Rodent Exterminator in NYC Before You Hire

By the NYC Rodent Control team · Updated 2026-10-08

Callers ask the same things again and again: how much will it cost, how long is the warranty, and will the mice come back. This guide turns those phone questions into a checklist, with straight answers on what a good company will say and why a firm price over the phone is rare.

Why most companies want to inspect before quoting

A common first reaction is to ask for a price on the phone. The honest answer from most rodent companies is that they have to see the property. A one bedroom apartment with two gaps behind the stove and a house with twenty gaps around pipes, vents and the foundation are very different jobs, even if both have mice.

That is why a normal sequence is: inspection, then findings, then a written quote, then you decide. You pay for the work after you have seen the scope. Be careful with any company that gives a firm price without asking about the property type, the number of floors and what you have seen.

What the operator will usually ask you

When you call, an operator or a recorded greeting may come first. After the beep or the menu, expect a few short questions. Having the answers ready makes the call faster.

  • Your ZIP code, so they can confirm coverage in your area.
  • The property type: apartment, co-op or condo unit, single family house, or business.
  • How many floors or units, and whether there is a basement.
  • What you have seen: droppings, gnaw marks, noises at night, chewed food, or a live animal.
  • How soon you want someone out.
  • Whether you own or manage the property or are a tenant. Tenants usually need the owner's approval for work in the building.

Questions to ask about the price

  1. Is this price for one visit or for the full program with follow ups?
  2. Does it include sealing entry points, or only traps and bait?
  3. Is the price for the whole house or each apartment?
  4. What can change the price after the inspection, for example more holes than expected?
  5. Will I get the quote in writing?

Prices vary with the number of openings. In our experience a unit can need two holes sealed or twenty. For ranges, see our mouse and rat cost guides.

Questions to ask about the warranty

Callers often ask how long the guarantee lasts. The warranty depends on what was found and what was sealed, so a fair answer is that it is confirmed after the inspection. Ask for it in writing and ask what it covers: new activity in treated areas, in sealed areas, or both.

Be wary of a warranty that has no conditions. Mice and rats can find a new opening if the building changes, for example after plumbing or utility work.

Questions to ask about the method

  • Do you seal entry points first? Sealing is what keeps rodents out. Treatment alone is not enough.
  • What do you use to seal: steel wool composite, hardware cloth, metal flashing or sealant?
  • Do you use bait? Where, and in locked stations?
  • Do you offer live traps for people who prefer a humane approach?
  • Who applies any pesticide, and is that person licensed?

Questions to ask about timing and follow up

Ask how soon someone can come, whether weekends are available, and how many follow up visits are included. A company that books you quickly but does not return to check traps and sealed areas leaves the most important step undone.

If you are calling several companies to compare prices, say so. A good company will not mind and will tell you what to compare, such as the scope of sealing and the length of follow up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why will you not give me a price over the phone?

Because the price depends on the number of gaps, the building and how long rodents have been active. An inspection shows the scope, and then you get a written quote.

Is the inspection free?

Ask when you book. Some companies include it with the work and some charge a small fee. Get the answer before the visit.

How long is the warranty on rodent work?

It depends on what was found and sealed. Ask for the length and what it covers in writing after the inspection.

Can I get a text with the details after the call?

Many companies will send a text or email with the appointment and the quote. Ask the operator to send it to your phone.

Do I need to be home for the inspection?

Someone should let the technician in. In a building, the manager or owner may need to arrange access to basements and utility rooms.
